K. J. Somaiya College of Arts & Science was founded in 1960. The man behind the scene was none other than late Param Pujya Shri Karamshibhai J. Somaiya, an industrialist of great vision. The sprawling, bustling, vast Vidyavihar Campus with multiple disciplines is the fulfillment of the dream of Shri Karamshibhai J. Somaiya in the best service of education. In the space of three decades, there has been a sea-change in the educational scenario.

K. J. Somaiya College of Science emerged as an independent institution in the year 1972 in Somaiya Vidyavihar. In 1986, the Commerce Stream was added to this existing Science College giving rise to the present College “K.J. Somaiya College of Science and Commerce".
At present about 4000 students are receiving instructions in the undergraduate, graduate and the post- graduate courses in the disciplines of Science and Commerce. Students of the Science and Commerce streams have been showing remarkable performance in various Board, University and other competitive examinations

The Post-Graduate student strength of the College is the second largest among the colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University.

The college has a permanent affiliation with the University of Mumbai. The college has been awarded ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and accreditation Council.
