The year 1960 witnessed a great event of laying the foundation stone for the K .J. Somaiya College of Arts and Science under the auspices of the Somaiya Vidyavihar Trust. The year 1972 saw the emergence of the K. J. Somaiya College of Science as an independent institution. The Commerce faculty was added in the year 1986. K. J. Somaiya College of Science and Commerce has been awarded an "A" grade in 2004 by National Accreditation And Assessment Council, an autonomous body of University Grants Commission, Government of India.

To keep pace with the latest trends in higher education and industry the college has started new courses such as B.Sc.(I.T.) , B.Sc. (Biotechnology), M. Sc.(I.T.) and B.C.A.F. (Accounts and Finance). Besides responding to the needs of Modern Science and Technology our college also tries to expose the students to the values of our culture.

The college provides opportunities to develop the overall personality of the students and thus try to achieve the motto of the college –Dnyanadeva Tu Kaivalyam  (knowledge leads to sublimity).

There are several curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in which students participate and show their talents. Noteworthy to mention is the grant from the UGC for adventure sports promotion program for high altitude trek in the Himalayan ranges and receiving the Vice Chancellor’s banner for the N.C.C. Girls’ Battalion.

The college is a centre for post-graduate program and research. There are nineteen recognized research guides in various subjects. The college has one of the largest intake capacity for the post graduate students in different subjects among the affiliated colleges of the University of Mumbai.

The college has been short listed for the Award of Best College of the University of Mumbai for the year 2006-07.

The Academic Audit Committee comprising external experts complemented the principal for the innovative program received by UGC i.e. P.G. Diploma in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System. The committee also mentioned the funding received from bodies like the UGC, NAAC and the University for conducting Seminars and for carrying out research projects.

With the encouragement from the management and co-operation of all the staff-members, I am sure the college will achieve greater heights.
