Under the support of Khyentse Foundation grant, the K J Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies is pleased to offer Tibetan language course for this year. We have successfully run this course for consecutive two years and we are pleased to announce admissions to the third batch. Students will be taught by a native Tibetan teacher. Thanks to the generous support of the Khyentse Foundation, we are uniquely placed to offer such a course in the city of Mumbai and enable students to undertake the study of this fascinating language, which opens a window to Tibetan as well as ancient Indian culture.

Tibetan is the liturgical language of the entire Tibetan Buddhist world which includes Tibet itself, Bhutan, Nepal, Mongolia, and some part of Russia too. Besides, it is widely spoken in Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh in India. As one of the languages in which the Buddhist doctrine was preserved, we look to the Tibetan canon to aid us in the recovery of many texts which have been lost in their Sanskrit original. As His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama mentioned when he visited our campus, Tibetans preserve the Nalanda tradition which, apart from Buddhist texts, also pertains to the study of logic, grammar, lexicography, poetry and drama, medicine and chemistry, astrology and divination, painting and biographies of saints.

Tibetan language is most important for those who are engaged in Buddhist studies, particularly in later developments of Mahayana and Vajrayana. It is also of interest to Sanskrit students as the texts preserved in Tibetan are mostly lost to us in their original Sanskrit. It is also of great importance to those who wish to pursue Buddhist practice in its Vajrayana form.

Admissions are open to the Beginner's level.
