  • Abstract

Meteorology or weather science is the study of weather, a state of the atmosphere with respect to heat or cold, wetness or dryness, calm or storm, clearness or cloudiness. In Sanskrit, various terms are used to denote the cloud, such as, megha, dharadhara, jaladhara, varivaha, balahaka, ambubh?t, varida, jimuta, ghana, jalamuk, jalada, nabhra?, abda, nadanu, ambuda, dhumayoni, payogarbha, ta?itvan, stanayitnu etc. The combination of smoke (vapour), fire, wind and water forms a cloud. It exists in four major states, namely, abhra, barddala, ghana and gha?a. Four types of clouds are described in Sanskrit literature - pu?kara, avarta, sa?varta and dro?a. Description of these types is given and the weather predictions based on observation of different forms of clouds are mentioned in this article.
