Successful organization evolve, they change with time because they know if they don’t their existence in the market is at stake and hence it is imperative to undergo through the rigid process of Change. We hear a lot about organizational change in the current fast-changing business scenario. There is a lot of hue and cry about what exactly is a planned organizational change, what is the ultimate goal, why is it important for an organization to undergo change etc.? Some of the queries have been answered below. Here we go:


Organizational Change is a strategic measure undertaken by the organization with the objective of changing the nature of the business itself or the way in which an organization is doing its business.


The main goal of Planned Organisational Change is to improve the ability of the organization to adapt to changes in its environment. Planned changes are intentional and goal oriented.

Planned organizational change are governed by various forces of change, Some of the forces of change are Nature of workforce, Technology, Economic Shocks, Competition, Social trends, World Politics etc. Organizations must foresee the market scenarios and economic conditions and take decisions which aid in the sustainable development of the organization.


Bringing a change in not an easy task and any change will trigger resistance from sources that tend to maintain status quo.The resistance to change can be broadly classified into two groups:


  • Individual Resistance to change- fear of the unknown, economic factors, habit etc.
  • Organizations Resistance to change - structural Inertia, limited focus of change, threat to expertise, threat to established power relationships etc.

Organizations must overcome these opposing forces and see to that changes that benefit the organization are implemented.


It’s obvious that resistance is bound to happen because of the “uncertainty” caused due to the change. But the changes need to be implemented for organization’s development and sustainability. Hence various measures need to be used to deal with the resistances that crop up. The most common tactics that are used for dealing with the resistance to change are education and communication, participation, facilitation and support, negotiation, manipulation , co-optation and coercion to name a few. Incorporating these tactics will help in dealing with the changes in the organizations and also help in avoiding unwanted disturbances and chaos.


Thus, it can be interpreted that managing organizational change is one of the most essential pre-requisite for adapting with the competitive challenges and transitioning from the present state of business to a desired futuristic course of action. It is vital to develop and implement a plan of action for managing change successfully.
