This programme is designed for those who have basic knowledge of Sanskrit language and who want to pursue higher studies in Sanskrit.
In the first year, students pursue the study of Sanskrit at a higher level of proficiency and are introduced to various genres of literature. Students get the opportunity to study selections from the Vedas, texts on grammar, philosophy, poetry, poetics, etymology, etc. In alignment with the NEP 2020 guidelines the programme will also offer a strong base in research methodology. Students will get an opportunity of on job training experience in the second semester.
In the second year of the programme, students can select any one subject as their specialization, from among Vyakarana (Grammar), Sahitya (Indian Poetics) or Darshana (Indian Philosophy).
Main purpose of M.A. Sanskrit programme is to cultivate the ability amongst the students to read and understand the original Sanskrit texts and their commentaries. Sanskrit literature includes a wide range of topics. Vyakarana specialization helps the students to understand the precise and scientific framework of this ancient language. Darshana specialization helps the students to develop insights in the schools of Indian Philosophy. Sahitya specialization allows the students to understand ancient theories in poetics and their application. Teachers mainly adopt the constructivist approach of pedagogy by which students can participate in the process of understanding and not just passively receive the information. This approach helps to develop critical thinking amongst the students.
Multiple methods of assessment also allow for experiential learning and critical thinking.
