A grand inauguration was held on 10th Jan, 2019 for the recently added extension–Riturang. The unveiling of plaque was done at the hands of Hon. Chief Guest Padma Vibhushan and Padmashree awardee Dr. R. Chidambaram, India’s distinguished experimental physicist. In addition, the inaugural ceremony was marked with the presence of President Somaiya, Shri. Samir Somaiya, Valuable presence of Somaiya family & special invitees, Secretary, Somaiya Trust Lt. Gen. Jagbir Singh, Provost Somaiya campuses, Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Principal Dr. Suresh Ukarande, Vice principal, Dr. Sunita Patil, Chief Architect- Mr. Sameep Padora, Mrs. Aparna Dhareshwar, project office staff Mr. Kagne, Mr. Pokal, Contractor Mr. Pate and Mr. Patil of GR Enterprises and SEW Engineering Pvt Limited.

The unveiling of plaque was followed by felicitation of hon. chief guest Dr. R. Chidambaram, by Shri. Samir Somaiya, whose gift gesture was an exotic shawl –a handwoven gesture from students from Somaiya Kalniketan school, Kutch and a book dedicated to our founder —titled Karamshi by author Varsha Adalja.

At the onset, Principal Dr. Suresh Ukarande acknowledged the efforts of our President Shri. Samir Somaiya, as the new structure is his creative vision.  He also elucidated the symbolic representation of Extension Building –Riturang –that symbolizes ‘colors of life’. Briefing on the need to have the proposed requirement of AICTE norms. Chief Architect-Mr. Sameep Padora too apprised on the Green Initiative and the importance of open space in academic world.

Hon Chief Guest Padma Vibhushan and Padmashree awardee Dr. R. Chidambaram (DAE-Homi Bhabha Professor in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) emphasized that apart from the “Nuclear threat posed by the nation, the IT security too is of prime concern. Service to the nation must be through the medium of eliminating all the sorts of frauds including ---cybercrime. With the sophistication in IT sector, nnuclear energy too proves to be a vital for unleashing the beneficial aspects to mankind.”

In his presidential address, Shri. Samir Somaiya shared his vision of space crunched city like Mumbai, and the concept of ‘Open Spaces’.  He expressed his delight that Riturang stands out as a unique structure.  “It is a Green Initiative as its open space, judicious use of glass for bright light effects are efforts towards environmental sustainability. The structure proves a commitment we have towards Environmental protection is noteworthy. Green Technology is ‘Pledge’ that the Engineering students need to execute. Apart from economic development, this new structure also stands proudly as a source of Architectural innovation.”

The event came to a close by vote of thanks by Secretary, Somaiya Trust Lt. Gen. Jagbir Singh.
