Report on Phase 1 of SOMAIYA GREEN INITIATIVE

The NSS Unit of Somaiya Vidyavihar launched Phase 1 of the Somaiya Green Initiative on 11th September 2025, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, at Chedda Nagar Mangroves, Chembur.
Invitations were sent via email to 9,691+ students, teaching faculty, alumni, admin and non-teaching staff. Out of these, 452 students expressed interest for Phase 1 & 2, and finally 26 students and 9 faculty/non-teaching staff confirmed and actively participated in Phase 1. More than 90% of the participants were youth, and the group also included 11 international students.
Participants reached the green venue either by cycle (green mode) or through eco-friendly vehicle support.
With due permission, activities were conducted in deforested and degraded reserve forest areas, where participants followed two traditional methods of guerilla seed dispersion and one modern technique:

Individual Throwing Method (Five-Angle Palm)

Stamping & Catapulting Seedballs

Drone-based Seed Sowing
The initiative was themed around the Panchabhootha (five elements), connecting ecological action with Somaiya’s philosophy of sustainability:

Vayu (Air): Throw the seedball, spread green life

Agni (Fire): Stamp the seedball, ignite change

Jala (Water): Catapult seedballs, revive wetlands

Akash (Sky): Drones sow from above

Prithvi (Earth): Press seeds into soil, return to roots
This initiative reflects Somaiya Vidyavihar’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, biodiversity, and eco-conscious innovation. It is not merely symbolic, but a living practice of giving back to nature while engaging youth, faculty, and the community in collective action.
