Dr. Sugandha Shetye Brief Bio data:
Dr. Sugandha Shetye, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce has obtained her Ph.D.in Physical Chemistry from University of Mumbai in 1995. She has been teaching Physical chemistry and Environmental Sciences at K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce, Vidyavihar, Mumbai for last 30 years. Dr. Shetye is recognized for Ph.D. in chemistry and Environmental Science. Five students have completed M.Sc. Chemistry ( By research ) and two students have successfully completed Ph.D. in Chemistry under her guidance. 20 research papers have been published in reputed national and international Journals in chemistry.
Dr Shetye is actively involved in The Global Alliance on Sustainable Development ,a collaborative program of Somaiya Vidyavihar University and Michigan State University ,USA .
She was Invited to Michigan State University , East Lansing,USA during November 3-9,2019 as a Team Lead on the Project SOIL HEALTH for interaction with the research team at MSU.
She has been elected as President of Indian Chemical Society, Mumbai Chapter in the year 2019 and has been actively involved in the organization of several programmes including Aptitude test in chemistry, Research Scholars’ meet in chemistry etc.
As Dean (Academic Programs) she has introduced Honours Experience program in the college ,dveloped several acdemic programs in collaboration with MMR-Environment Improvement Society , two Refresher courses under the aegis of UGC-HRDC ,University of Mumbai and Chairperson , Practical Examination, PET examinations in Environmental Science at University of Mumbai during her tenure September 2015 to December 2018 .
She introduced Honours Program in the year 2016 for the exceptionally talented students . Under this program 7 students were awarded Honours Experience award in the year 2019 .Two Honours students , Bro Shubham Biswal And Ms Shruti Joshi were the recipients of Student Exchange and Mentorship programs announced by USConsulate ,Mumbai.
1. Honours student Bro. Shubham Biswal Was selected for the student Exchange Program on Global Environmet Leadership Program at Universiy of Montanna during July -Aug 2018.
2. A very Beautiful 10000 Sq Ft Biodiversity Garden has been created by the Students Ms Revathi Swamy,Revati Vispute and Shruti Joshi in the Somaiya Vidyavihar Campus under her Guidance under the Youth Leaders for Environment Conservation project awarded by US Consulate Mumbai and E Konnect Knowledge Foundation in the year 2019-20.
She has introduced new Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) on Business Skills for Chemists and Environmental Chemistry that will be offered for semester V students from the academic year 2020-21 .
She has successfully organized and hosted Two 21 days Refresher Courses in Environmental Studies for University teachers in the year 2015 and 2018 under the aegis of UGC-HRDC, Govt of India in Somaiya Vidyavihar.

She has been invited on the Board of Studies in the subject of Chemistry and Environmental Science of the Autonomous institution Ramnarain Ruia College, Matunga since 2017-18.
She has immense experience in curriculum development in the subjects of Chemistry, Environmental chemistry and Environmental Science for Undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs for University of Mumbai and autonomous institutions.
She is one of the most vibrant teachers, always willing to bring improvements in teaching learning processes. Under her leadership the Department of Environmental Sciences was started at K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce in the year 2010 -11.She introduced the Departmental Fest 'CONVERGENCE" in 2011 organized by the students for the first time.
Capacity Development Programs in Environment Management (CDEM) leading to certificate courses and PG Diploma in Environment Management have been introduced under her leadership in collaboration with Mumbai Metropolitan region Environment Improvement Society (MMREIS) during the year 2016-2018. She has developed five Certificate course of five day duration on Environment Management namely,
1.Urban Ecology
2. Environmental Policy and regulations
3.Water Management at LocalLevel
4. Integrated Solid Waste Management
5. Green Built Environment
She is actively involved in consultancy to two projects Save Ulhas River Project by an NGO Vanshakti –since December 2012 and Heavy Metal Analysis in the Coastal Waters at Mumbai, 2007-09 for Maharashtra Pollution control Board.
Dr. Shetye is an active member of several National level professional bodies like Indian Chemical Society , The Indian Science Congress Association , Kolkata , Society of Material Chemists .
She has been a co-author for several textbooks in chemistry, environmental ethics and environmental Chemistry for UG students since 2008.
Dr Shetye is immensely interested in the field of biodiversity conservation, Climate Change, environment and chemical education and awareness. She is an active member of BNHS and has worked as volunteer for Conservation Education Centre, Bombay Natural History society (BNHS).
She has also worked as caretaker for 1MAH Girls BN, the girls NCC unit of our college (2008-2012)
Dr Shetye has explored the Himalayas and Western Ghats through several trekking expeditions and wildlife camps with BNHS that fostered her passion for conservation of rich biodiversity existing in our country. She has travelled remotest parts of our country through several National trekking expeditions organized by Youth Hostels Association of India(YHAI).
She was one of the Team Leader of the Environment Protection Program ‘Keep Rohtang Pass Clean-May2013’organized by Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI) in association with District administration Kullu, Special area Development authority and Tourism Development Council, Manali, Himachal Pradesh.
