Susannah Malkan is an Assistant Professor in the Dept of Sociology.She has been teaching the subject since August 2001.She has a total work experience of 13 years in the subject of Sociology.
Susannah Malkan has taught courses that cover various dimensions of the subject of Sociology.She has taught subjects for courses such as Bachelor of Arts,Bachelor of Mass Media,Bachelor of Management Studies and Master of Arts.She has also taught the Post Graduate Diploma course at Sophiya College(Polytechnic),at the Dept of Social Communications Media,in the subject of Mass Media Research.She has also been instrumental in guiding the projects of the students of this course as they endeavour to become film makers,editors,journalists,photographers and cinematographers of the future.
Susannah Malkan is currently working on a Phd on the topic’Globalisation and Corporatisation of the Hindi Film Industry:Effects on human Resources’ She is doing her Phd under the guidance of Dr Sharit Bhowmik(Dean ,Head of the Dept of Labour and Management Studies,Tata Institute of Social Sciences)
Susannah Malkan owes her interest in academics,to her intellectually enriching family background.Her mother Dr(Prof)Joyce Anson had been the Head of the Dept of Philosophy at the St Teresa B.Ed College ,Mumbai.She had also been a proffessor at the Mayo College(Jaipur)and Maharani Gayatri Devi College(Jaipur) during the former years of her career.
Susannah Malkan’s maternal grandfather had been the principal of the S.A Jain College in Ambala,Punjab.Her paternal grandfather had been an author,writng books on the Christian faith.
Susannah Malkan attributes her successful orientation in the field of academics to a quality education at the Cathedral and John Connon School(Mumbai).She graduated from the prestigious St Xavier’s College of Arts,Science and Commerce(Mumbai).She completed her post graduation from the Mumbai University.She has been been a first class student throughout the course of her academic pursuits,being the recipient of the the open merit scholarship award throughout her higher secondary and graduate educational career.She is also a rank holder,securing the highest rank at the University of Mumbai ,Dept of Sociology,for the Masters of Arts degree.
In pursuing her goals in contributing towards the larger social community,she is actively working with organizations such as Akshara(Women’s Resource and Study Centre),Population First(LAADLI) and Bharatiya Stree Shakti(BSS),focussing on issues related to the girl child,women's empowerment and SHGs for women.She has also combined the activities of the Dept of Sociology,S.K Somaiya College with those of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Dept of Social Work in extending students' involvement to the rural and urban areas.
Susannah Malkan has conducted several workshops during her tenure.She has several paper publications to her credit.She has also presented papers in several seminars/conferences at the national and international level.
She is currently writing a book on ‘Tamasha-A Diminishing Folk Culture’She is also making a documentary film on the theme of this book.
Her areas of interest also include ‘rural and urban research-issues and interventions’.For this purpose ,she has collaborated with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences,Dept of Social Work.
Susannah Malkan maintains an avid interest in music as she is trained to play the violin and the piano.
She also takes keen interest in painting as she has won interschool and state level awards in painting.
She has also participated in theatre workshops with director Ramu Ramanathan,(acted in a play on ‘Life in Mumbai city’ enacted for the benefit of college students)
She has trained under Jennifer Kendall Kapoor and Shiraz Jeffreez(Theatre artistes and Speech and Drama experts).She has won awards in these areas.
