Dr. Luckman Muhmood is currently a professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Associate Dean (Industry Academia Interface) at KJ Somaiya School of Engineering, Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai. He completed his PhD in Materials Process Science at KTH Sweden and Master's in Process Metallurgy from IIT Bombay. During his PhD, he focused on transport phenomena of sulphur at the slag-metal interface using X-rays. This work was much appreciated as his publication with Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B was chosen as The Editors Choice for Open Access in 2010. He was awarded the 12th Willy Korf Award for young excellence at New York in 2011. Prior to joining K J Somaiya College of Engineering, he was with CSIRO Clayton working on understanding the science behind controlling of molten oxide jets. This work is critical in controlling the extraction of heat from slags using the Dry Slag Granulation technique. He has received the 2017 EPD Science Award from The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society at San Diego, USA for this work. He has also received the SK Somaiya Award for excellence in research in 2023. He is also the Joint Secretary of ASM International India Chapter and a life member of Indian Institute of Metals and Indian Chemical Society.
His current research interests include, thermophysical property measurements of molten slags and salts, Carbon Engineering and Waste to Wealth. He is currently guiding 3 PhD candidates and is involved in 2 major SERB/ANRF funded projects.
