Mumbai University wins Gold medal in Women Table Tennis after 25 years at The All India level Tournament

Mumbai: After 25 years, Mumbai University bags the Gold medal at the All India Level Tournament in Table Tennis

The championship started on 7 February 2017, with North Zone Table Tennis tournament witnessing a participation of 60 team’s men and 55 team’s women.  The four girls in the team were Semhora D’souza from Khalsa College, Mansi Deshpande from Kelkar College, Rutuja Kopkar from SK Somaiya College of Arts, Science and Commerce and Jagruti Murbadkar from K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce.

Interestingly two girls  Rutuja Kopkar and Commerce and Jagruti Murbadkar are studying at colleges of Somaiya Vidyavihar, which has sports as a major focus in its push towards holistic development.  

Says the Provost Dr. Rajendra Welukar, Somaiya Vidyavihar “ We are proud of the achievements of the girls. At Somaiya Vidyavihar we create an atmosphere which encourages all kinds of sports. We believe that education institutions need to create the space to allow youth with a passion for sports to flourish.  I am happy to see that our young girls have made Mumbai University proud”. 

On her astounding win “Jagruti said “ I am so happy that all my hard work and dedication has paid off!  If it hadn’t been for the encouragement and cooperation that I received from my college, I don’t think that this would have been possible” I am going to continue working hard and strive to achieve many more such victories in the future”.

Rutuja added, “ I would like to thank my College for the support and love that I have received. It was the belief and faith of my coach, and parents that I have achieved this today.”
