  • Abstract

Contemporary national discourses in India are replete with narratives of progress, self-reliance, positive national identity and pan national sensibility. Such discourses seep into cultural texts such as novels and films. Indian regional cinema with its English subtitles both articulates and interrogates the national consciousness. Malayalam ecocinema of the recent years is a fine specimen of this regional art form that reveals a complex relation with national discourse of economic progress. Aavasavyooham: An Arbit Documentation of an Amphibian Hunt by Krishand is one such cinematic endeavour which tries to counter balance national discourse with bio regional discourse. This paper is an attempt to analyse the visual rhetoric and subtitles of Aavasavyooham to show how bio regionalism and environmentalism have made a significant impact on the national imaginary articulated in cinema. It also deploys the tenets of post colonialism and ecocriticism in revealing the clash of discourses in Krishand’s movie. Further this research paper explains how Krishand upholds an inclusive vision of regional and national space which challenges the hyper materialistic perspectives of commercial nationalism. Also within the purview of this paper is the scrutiny of rich subtitles which provides an Indian English cultural context for both national consciousness and environmental consciousness.
