Microfinance plays an important role by providing financial services such as loans, credit, insurance and savings to low income and disadvantaged groups. In India, its distribution is conducted by various institutional models such as Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), Small Finance Banks (SFBs), Non-Banking Financial Corporations (NBFCs) and other cooperatives. In spite of growth in these channels, their outreach is unbalanced across regions. This study therefore explores the trends of microfinance outreach in India from the year 2016 to 2025 with the help of secondary data obtained from The Bharat Microfinance Reports published by NABARD (National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development) in association with Sa-Dhan (Association of Community Development Finance Institutions) annually. This research identifies sectoral patterns and regional disparities in terms of borrowers and outstanding loan levels. The microfinance outreach is evaluated on the basis of number of loan accounts, unique active borrowers value of loans disbursed, value of outstanding loan, total districts covered by different type of microfinance institutions, etc. as well as rural urban and region wise break up of active client base. The analysis indicates an overall growth in outreach with a slight decline in the present year 2025. The study helps in understanding geographical differences in borrower outreach with the lowest percentage share of the client base in the northeast region. It also determines the shift of borrower base from urban to rural category in the last 10 years. The findings of this study suggest implementation of region-specific policies to deepen financial access. Additionally, the study also has a social importance as it sheds light on outreach gaps among various regions in India. With the help of this longitudinal analysis, this research offers pan India insights on microfinance outreach patterns.
